Flow is a Practice

Flow with Twin Hoops

There is a group that is getting hoopers all amped up on Facebook at the moment and it is called The Hooping Game.

The rules are simple. You post “I’m in” and someone will give you a random song. All you have to do is video yourself hooping to that song and upload it for everyone to see. Easy right?

WRONG!

I mean clearly it is fun and super cool to watch everyone else do their thing but the noise of my inner chatter is currently the loudest it has been in a very long time.

“That is how you hoop?” “What happened to your flow” “where are all your rad tricks” “people are going to think you suck” “you keep doing the same stuff over and over” “you are not very connected to the music” “they will think you look dumb” “you are too fat/uncoordinated/” Woah already, shut up!

I highly recommend you put yourself in the game and listen. You won’t find a more supportive and nonjudgemental group, they are all there to cheer you on. But listen to what you have to say about yourself.

When I sorted my inner critic’s crap from fact I found something though. Flow is a practice. A personal one. It can rise and fall away, shift and evolve just like anything else. We all express it differently and when we give ourselves permission to play we are sharing our true self, that is all we can be.

I realised that I have been working so hard on breaking moves down, teaching the how to and I forgot to give myself the gift of daily flow practice. And so I am saying “I’m in” The Hooping Game as often as my schedule allows. Are you IN?

This week’s tutorial is a guide to practicing a twin flow. This is a natural flow for me that came out of play and practice and I am excited to share it with you and see what you make of it.

Twins are about balance and connection, the left and the right. They require patience and understanding, softness yet control. I think you are going to enjoy this one!
